I always have been fascinated by photography.
But with the introduction of the digital camera it all became too easy, too predictable …to me.
So I forced myself to go back to the roots of real analog photography.
Not just by making the photograph itself, but by controlling the entire photographic process.

This brought me back to the middle of the 19th century, to the amazing Collodion wet plate process.
And every single day I feel challenged to refine and improve myself.

The making of "lost"

Today we finally had some time to make some new plates.
Weather was fine, little sun and 18 degrees.
So "eskimo time...."

This plate was in my mind for already a few months
but it´s always a challenge to find the right location, having the right weather etc.
This time we (my friend Ferry and me) made 2 plates I am extremely happy with.

Both plates were made on 26x26cm black glass.
Exposure time around 1/2 seconds.
Hermagis portrait petzval.
350mm 4.5 wide open.

New plate carying box

What to do with Easter?
Recently I bought myself some Festool woodworking tools (really great stuff!)
I had nothing to do and the sun was shining today
(although it's still very cold over here).

So I made myself an adjustable plate box.
This box can hold 13 26x26cm plates and is adjustable to 18x24 cm or even 13x18cm.
I can take out the middle part and adjust it to the other sizes.
From now on I can have a shoot and bring my plates home safely without
asking somebody to hold them the whole drive back home......
Still have to do the paintjob.

Demonstration at Fotobond AWB

Last weeks I was invited by de FOTOBOND AWB to give a demonstration
about the colldoion process.
They organized a beautiful room equipped with a beamer, live video and plenty of room
to set up my darkroom tent.
During the shoot the camera man filmed the whole process and the audience was able to
follow it life on screen. Just great!

Monique de Zwart, thank you for the invitation
I told the audience about the history of the process, what brought me to wet plate
and we made some plates although the light wasn't optimal.
No studio portraits but an impression how wet plates look like

Some pictures made during the evening..

Pictures were made by Ferry vd Vliet who btw is hosting a great weblog
